Activision has rotated among its three lead studios for the development of Call of Duty since 2012. After 2018's Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 by Treyarch and this year's Call of Duty by Infinity Ward, it was supposed to be Sledgehammer to lead the 2020 Call of Duty. However, Activision planned to switch things up by assigning support studio Raven to take a leadership role alongside Sledgehammer for a game set during the Cold War.
Treyarch will now be taking creative leadership on the 2020 Call of Duty, with Raven and Sledgehammer as support, after sources said that staff from the two studios argued frequently over the past year over the development of the game.
Treyarch will be making Black Ops 5, and will transform the work that Raven and Sledgehammer have so far done into a campaign mode for the game. Black Ops 5 is expected to be a cross-generation game, to coincide with the launch of the next PlayStation by Sony (SNE) and Xbox by Microsoft (MSFT), which are expected in the fall of 2020.
