Consumer stocks were ending broadly lower in Monday trading, with the SPDR Consumer Staples Select Sector ETF (XLP) dropping 1.3% and the SPDR Consumer Discretionary Select Sector ETF (XLY) retreating 3.0%.

In company news, Hertz Global Holdings (HTZ) slid 3.4% after the company Monday said it will pay $168 million before the end of the year to settle customer claims they were wrongfully arrested after the company reported overdue car rentals as stolen vehicles.
